Because current energy sources sometimes produce variable power supplies, it is important to store for use when supply drops below demand. Battery storage one method power. However, geologic (underground) may be able retain vastly greater quantities of over much longer durations compared typical battery storage. Geologic also has high flexibility; many different types materials can used chemical, thermal, or mechanical in a variety underground settings. The U.S. Survey (USGS) capability research and assess possible domestic resources help prepare future

Geologic Storage of CO2
Dynamic imaging provides an effective way to integrate previous time-lapse data with current data in order to estimate a current model. We present two methods useful for continuous dynamic reservoir and subsurface monitoring. The first method is a stochastic method for the inversion of geophysical data. It uses the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) that we demonstrate using time-lapse surface seism...

Efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change have led research and industry groups to explore ways of applying existing technologies and practices to the challenge of reducing CO2 emissions. The storage of CO2 in underground geologic reservoirs is one such idea that employs techniques developed for oil and gas production and transmission. For example, CO2 has been injected into petroleum r...

Renewable energy resources can indisputably minimize the threat of global warming and climate change. However, they are intermittent and need buffer storage to bridge the time-gap between production (off peak) and demand peaks. Based on geologic and geochemical reasons, the North German Basin has a very large capacity for compressed air/gas energy storage CAES in porous saltwater aquifers and s...
متن کاملGeologic storage of radioactive waste: field studies in Sweden.
Access to a granitic rock mass in an iron ore mine in Sweden provided a unique opportunity for underground experiments related to the geologic disposal of radioactive waste. These field tests demonstrated the importance of hydrogeology and the difficulties in predicting the thermomechanical behavior of fractured granitic rocks. To characterize a site fully, measurements made from the surface mu...
